Footnotes in Gaza

Joe Sacco’s Palestine brought the concept of the illustrated journalism to a new level of popularity and appreciation, investigating the issue of Israeli occupation of Gaza from the perspective of the Palestinians. Now Sacco has returned to Gaza to investigate the 1956 slaughter of over a hundred Palestinians at the hands of Israeli soldiers, in the hope that he can find out what really happened – was it a premeditated massacre or a bungled military operation? But it soon becomes clear that, although spikes in media coverage can bring international attention to special events, the residents of Gaza feel that little has changed in the intervening years.
