Escape from “Special”
When you’re a bright young girl, growing up in a world that seems strange and nonsensical, it can be all too easy to make enemies of your parents and your peers. Melissa is one such girl, the semi-autobiographical heroine of Miss Lasko-Gross’s debut graphic novel, who copes with her life by escaping into horror movies, drawing comics and rejecting her parents’ religion.
