Charley’s War 5: Return to the Front

The fifth volume of Charley’s War sees the brave eponymous British soldier’s return to the horrific front of World War I. Reunited with some of his old buddies and also with his worst enemies (sadly not the German army but his own British commanders, seemingly intent on sending wave upon wave of young British men into the German meat-grinding machines), Charley’s war takes a decided turn for the worse through the spring of 1917.

Pat Mills and Joe Colquhoun’s Charley’s War was a ground-breaking strip that still holds as much drama and poignancy as when it was first published, back in 1979.
