Paul Cornell is one of the darlings of early Saturday evening TV, at least in the UK, having written episodes for both Dr Who and the currently running reworking of Robin Hood. Lucky for us, he does comics too.

Xtnct was originally written as a series for 2000AD but is now out in hardback, complete with art by D’Israeli. Set in the distant future, the nearly extinct human race use genetically modified flora and fauna to fight one another rather than risking their own lives in proper wars. But the trouble with training vicious pets to do your bidding is that they can sometimes turn on you, especially if you don’t look after them properly, and these blood-thirsty animals start to wonder if the world might not be a better place without their human masters.
