Powers

UPDATE: Volume 12 coming soon

Mixing cops and superheroes hadn’t occurred to anyone before the turn of the century, at which point it seems to have occurred to everyone at once. Alan Moore launched Top Ten into his line of America’s Best Comics; Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka started writing Gotham Central, set in Batman’s Gotham City Police Department; and Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming created Powers.

Powers is wholly owned by Bendis and Oeming, published under Marvel’s Icon imprint, giving the creators the ability to take the series where they want. In it, Detective Christian Walker is a police detective who tries to solve murders in a city where superheroes and god-like figures from alternate realities do battle in the streets around him. This doesn’t quite look at superhero life through the eyes of a mere mortal though – Walker was once a superhero himself.
