There probably aren’t enough good sword-and-sandals stories in comics, despite the rich diversity of ancient cultures available to draw on. Isabelle Dethan is doing her bit, however, writing and illustrating The Straw King, a multi-part graphic novel that kicks off with The Pharaoh’s Daughter.

Neith may be the daughter of a Pharaoh, but she’s one of many. Along with one of her brothers, she escapes what seems to be a future with little purpose to explore the world outside the palace. However, ancient Egypt is awash with danger and the pair soon find themselves captured and enslaved by Babylonians.

The Straw King 1: The Pharaoh’s Daughter is available digitally from Europe Comics.
